After over a month of anticipation and wait, San Antonio will once again know the fate of soccer in their town. Spurs Sports & Entertainment(SS&E), which operates the San Antonio Spurs (NBA), Austin Spurs (NBA D-League), Silver Stars (WNBA), and the Rampage (AHL) will announce that they will field a United Soccer League (USL) soccer team in 2016. The team will play at Toyota Field, the soccer-specific-stadium that was built for the San Antonio Scorpions of the NASL. The stadium was bought jointly by the city of San Antonio, Bexar County, and SS&E. It will be leased to SS&E for 20 years with the intention of bringing Major League Soccer to the Alamo City.
What has yet to be announced is the fate of the "current" tenants of Toyota Field, the San Antonio Scorpions. There are many rumors swirling around that an investor in Las Vegas is in the process of purchasing the franchise with the intentions of moving it to Las Vegas and playing the in the NASL. It is unclear whether or not they will keep the Scorpion name. What is widely accepted though is that the Scorpions will not be in San Antonio, in the NASL, in 2016.
Alamo Soccer will be at the presentation tomorrow morning and will live tweet it.
These are sad and exciting times for San Antonio soccer - more to come!
