San Antonio FC did two things on Saturday night that they had never done before; they won a game against LA Galaxy II and won their home opener for the first time in club history. SAFC emphatically opened up their 2017 home season with a complete 3-0 win over the 2015 USL Western Conference champions. The goals came from three incredibly important players for the club.
Mr. San Antonio himself, Rafa Castillo, gave the Alamo City boys the lead after just 12 minutes when Billy Forbes, claiming the ball after a rebounded shot attempt, sent the ball to Rafa who blasted it into the top netting from 8 yards out. The emotion of the moment for Castillo was evident in his celebration as he clenched his fists, yelled, and fell to the ground in pure excitement.
“I’m very proud of our guys for the way they worked from the first whistle." said Head Coach Darren Powell. "There was a lot of positive energy that the players showed. We got off to a good start and I thought today we scored three very good goals.”
The excitement continued as the team captain, Michael Reed, got in the goal scoring action just before the half-hour mark. After an injury prevented him from finishing out his first season in San Antonio, Reed is optimistic about this year saying, "We take it one game at a time and I think as long as we have guys stay healthy it’ll be a successful season."
To top off the night, fan-favorite Billy Forbes took a beautiful pass from César Elizondo, who chested the ball down and sent it forward to a running Forbes and slotted it past Jon Kempin to seal the deal. "To get out there and score gets a lot of emotion out of me," said Billy.
"I’m back and it feels good to be back.”
Billy leads the team in goals scored on the season with two.
San Antonio has a quick week as it turns around to face the Colorado Switchbacks on Friday, April 7 in its second straight home match at Toyota Field.
