San Antonio FC defeated Phoenix Rising FC Saturday night at Toyota Field, 1-0. The lone goal came from AJ Ajeakwa in the 12' minute to extend the team's club record unbeaten streak to 10 matches in USL play and 11 overall in 2017.
"We have to protect our house; all the guys worked hard tonight and we’re happy to get the win." said San Antonio native, Devin Vega
In front of a crowd of 7,414 fans, the Alamo City boys played a gritty match against a Rising team that was having to play without its most impactful player, Luke Rooney, who is out for the remainder of the season. The game-winner began with a great run by Billy Forbes who ditched two defenders, passed the ball to a running Kris Tyrpak who played it into the box where AJ directed his shot on goal to give the home side the advantage.
There were a few great opportunities for the home side to increase their lead in the second half, but ultimately Billy Forbes was unable to finish. Phoenix Rising held a possession advantage of 58.6% over SAFC, but were only able to create one shot on target the entire match. The SAFC defense shut down Phoenix's attack, especially former SAFC man Jason Johnson to only two shots, and Shaun Wright-Phillips to zero shots on the night. This was San Antonio's fourth straight shutout in USL play and seventh overall, which leads the league. Keeper Diego Restrepo leads the league with four shutouts.
"We’re playing really well right now," said forward AJ Ajeakwa. "Teams are going to try to come in and play well defensively, and we just have to figure it out. It’s like a game of chess."
SAFC will now travel to play Swope Park Rangers on Friday night. SWP are the defending 2016 USL Western Conference champions who lost to New York Red Bulls II in the USL Cup Final last season.
