San Antonio FC traveled to the Valley to visit its in-state rival and finally came away with a win. After four tries in their inaugural season, the proverbial monkey was lifted off the clubs back as they defeated RGV FC 1-0 to spoil the Toros' inaugural league match in their new stadium, H-E-B Park.
Anticipating a ruckus crowd, the Alamo City boys were greeted by a sparsely filled stadium, where the travelling support could be heard loudly. “It means a lot to have our fans here, " said the lone goal-scorer, Billy Forbes. "I think it’s great to see our fans come out and show support.”
The match was a tale of two halves. San Antonio was the aggressor in the first half snatching the game-winning goal in the 15' as Billy Forbes, off an assist from César Elizondo, hit the ball past RGV's Calle Brown in goal from his left foot. The second half saw the home side become more on the offense and tested the visitors defense till the final whistle. Despite taking over 60% of the possession, RGV was unable to break San Antonio's defense.
"We had to be resilient, show good character and defend well" said Head Coach Darren Powell. “Every time San Antonio and RGV meet the games are very close and very tight, and tonight was no different."
