San Antonio FC drew with fellow South Texas Rival, Rio Grande Valley FC, on a very humid evening in front of 4,650 fans on Wednesday night. The home squad came out in the first half the more aggressive side but still could not get a goal in the back of the net.
“The guys fought hard," said Coach Powell, "At the end of the day, we earned a good clean sheet." It's the second clean sheet of the season for SAFC and the first since their inaugural match at S2 back in early April.
Unfortunately, the Alamo City boys are currently on a 225 minute USL scoreless streak, dating back to their last away match in Oklahoma City. Last night's game was also the second consecutive without scoring - both home matches.
While the second half saw a determined San Antonio team eager for a goal, none came. Even though there were "good, solid performances from several players” according to Powell, the issues that have plagued the team all season were still evident. There were multiple defensive mistakes that almost led to Toros goals. If it weren't for the heroics in goal from captain Josh Ford, the match might have gone the other. And in the final third, San Antonio continued to struggle to finish and score. With 10 leagues matches played, SAFC are now 1/3 the way through their inaugural season.
The team will have a week before its next match, their Third Round tilt against the Des Moines Menace (PDL) in the U.S. Open Cup next Wednesday. The match will be played in Iowa. Their next USL league match will be against the Toros, this time in Edinburg, Texas.
