All-time regular season series: First match
San Antonio FC (2-2-3, 8pts) is coming off a heart-breaking loss to its South Texas rival, RGV FC. It is the first home loss of the season and first in club history. The Alamo City boys fought back from a 2-0 deficit with two goals in a matter of five minutes to tie the game in the 84'. However, an Greg Cochrane pass was intercepted by Houston Dynamo loanee, Rob Lovejoy, who took the ball all the way home to give him a brace and the visitors the first win in the new rivalry. San Antonio showed fight coming back in the game late to try and secure a precious home-point.
"We were poor to dig ourselves into a 2-0 hole, and to get back to 2-2 was brilliant", said Manolo Sanchez, who scored the first SAFC goal of the evening.
SAFC will next travel to Oklahoma City for another road match. The Oklahoma City Energy (1-3-1, 6pts) are coming off a scoreless draw with Arizona United in the desert. The Energy have only played five games so far with two matches in hand. OKC are the next closest USL club to SAFC and sent representatives down to Toyota Field when the club was formally introduced by the league. Their relative proximity to San Antonio will allow for fans to travel the approximately seven hour drive between the two sides.
This is the Energy's third season of existence, coming off a conference finals loss to Los Dos in 2015. It is also the first season that the club will be sharing the greater Oklahoma City area with another pro-soccer team, Rayo OKC of the second division NASL. Should they win their Second Round U.S. Open Cup match, Energy FC will meet their city rivals in the first ever meeting between the two sides.
Keys to the game:
SAFC showed a ton of fight in their narrow loss to the Toros and will want to come out aggressive if they want to get back in the win column. The team hasn't done terribly well on the road, posting a 1-1-2 W-D-L record. Better possession and finishing in front of goal will be key if they want to come away with a win.
With the Spurs prematurely knocked out of the NBA Playoffs, a win from San Antonio FC won't replace the team-record 67 win season, but it will will offer some reprise. Hopefully this will be the beginning of another good rivalry for the Alamo City boys.
The game is this Sunday, May 15th at 6:00pm CST. #OKCvSA
