All-time regular season series: First match
San Antonio FC (1-2-0, 5pts) continue their first extended road trip of the season with their second California stop - Orange County. SAFC traveled to Los Angeles in the mid-week and earned a valuable point against the league leading Galaxy II. A near-stoppage time goal from San Antonio's first-ever player signing, Carlos Alvarez, brought the Alamo City boys even with the defending Western Conference champions. Los Dos took a 1-0 half-time lead, but SAFC never gave up. While the scoring explosion we saw in the game against Seattle has settled down, the team has shown great resilience and fight, earning another point.
Good teams are able to grind out a result when they aren't playing well, especially on the road. That's exactly what SAFC did.
The OC Blues (0-1-2, 1pt), however, have not gotten off to a great start. After beginning the season with two straight defeats, the Blues are still looking for their first win of 2016 after finally earning a point in their last match vs LA Galaxy II. The Blues had a lot of success in 2015, ending the regular season at the top of the Western Conference. They puttered out of the playoffs though, losing to the 5-seed Galaxy 2-0 at home in their first playoff match.
Keys to the game:
Get JJ back on track by scoring some goals and continue to improve on crossing.
Anteater Stadium should not pose a threat to the squad; OC averaged just under 1,400 people per game in 2015. I'll look for San Antonio to come out with aggressive play and get out to an early lead. Playing a long, drawn-out match with the Blues will be a disadvantage for SAFC on the road. They need to take control of the game from the first whistle.
Expect coach Powell's squad to play aggressive in their second straight road match. Taking as many points away from the comfort of home as possible is so crucial. I don't think the OC Blues will get their first win of 2016 against the USL newcomers.
The game is this Saturday, April 16th at 9:00pm CST. #OCvSA
