All-time regular season series: 0-1-3, RGV leads
Last match: 0-3 loss at RGV (2016)
San Antonio FC (0-0-0, 0pts) will face the Rio Grande Valley Toros (0-0-0, 0pts) for the fifth edition of the South Texas Derby to open their second season in the USL. It will also be the inaugural USL match played at the Toro's brand new stadium, H-E-B Park. The first year of this rivalry was one-sided, in favor of the Valley, as the Alamo City boys were only able to sneak out a single point in a 0-0 draw in their second match-up in 2016 at home while dropping the other three matches.
San Antonio lost both matches that were played in Edinburg by a combined score of 0-4 in 2016. The lack of goal-scoring was a consistent theme in SAFC's inaugural season, especially away from home losing eight matches and only earning three wins on the road. With the additions of Kris Tyrpak and Billy Forbes, the return of César Elizondo and Shawn Chin, the attacking prowess of this team should be greatly improved. With midfielder and 11 match captain, Rafa Castillo, anchoring the midfield and Matt Cardone returning in the goal along with his team-leading four penalty kick saves from 2016 will bolster the defense along with other solid defensive signings.
It's a new season and with the core of San Antonio FC returning for its second season, it's important that last year remain last year. The 2017 edition of SAFC is very strong on paper - translating that to the pitch will be crucial if they want to make the playoffs this season. Their first test will be an important one - they have the opportunity to inflict pain on our closest rival, and exact revenge for their previous meeting, one that booted SAFC out of playoff contention.
The game is Sunday, March 26th at 6:00pm CST. #RGVvSA
