The USL announced today that the Austin Aztex would not participate in the 2016 season and have been granted a waiver for finding a new stadium that would meet league standards.
The Aztex were playing in House Park but were forced to play their remaining games at the Kelly Reeves Athletic Complex in the Round Rock ISD, north of Austin, due to the Memorial Day floods that damaged their home turf. Their efforts of finding a permanent soccer-specific stadium home have encountered "unforeseen delays" which has led to their 2016 hiatus. The team will need to either build their own stadium, or find a suitable alternative if they are to rejoin the league for the 2017 season.
The Hill Country Derby will not be played next year due to this announcement. The Scorpion family feels for the fans of the Aztex, as this is the second time in less than five years that Austin fans will be without a team. We will continue to monitor their efforts as they seek to find a new permanent home.
