In their first home match in almost a month, San Antonio FC (7-1-0, 22pts) remained unbeaten on the season as they defeated the visiting Sacramento Republic FC (3-1-4, 10pts) 1-0. Veteran midfielder Rafa Castillo scored the match's only goal via a penalty kick in the 64' to extend SAFC's record winning streak to five straight matches and its overall undefeated record of eight straight.
This was the first time that Sacramento had visited the Alamo City and it was a heated contest to say the least. Coming in without a win in four matches, Republic FC were desperate for a win, or at least a goal. During their four match winless streak, Sacramento had failed to score a single goal. Their frustration was apparent after Castillo's PK as yellow cards were being handed out like hot-cakes.
"You’ve got two passionate teams battling for points in this league," said Head Coach Darren Powell. "I thought it was a different type of game from the last couple of matches, but I’m very proud of our guys for how they challenged everything"
Tempers boiled over in second-half stoppage time as a near brawl emerged with both sides getting in each other's faces to stand up for their teammates. Despite the unfortunate end to the match, San Antonio FC had an overall solid match versus Sacramento. Backup keeper, Diego Restrepo had some key saves to keep his second straight clean sheet and the teams fifth this season. "I think he’s gotten better and better," said Coach Powell. "We have the good fortune of watching him in practice every day so there’s no surprise on our end, but tonight he grew again as a goalkeeper and we’ve got the best of Diego Restrepo to see."
Offensively, there weren't as many chances made by the home side with only three shots on target the entire match. Kris Tyrpak did everything possible to get San Antonio on the board throughout the game. He was the main distributor and facilitator for SAFC.
San Antonio will stay in the Alamo City for their next two matches, the first coming this Saturday against Seattle Sounders FC 2 for the second and final regular season matchup between the two sides.
