The USL released the 2017 season schedule today for its 30 clubs. The league expanded the number of matches to 32, up from 30 in 2016. Clubs will play two games (one home, one away) against each conference rival. The remaining four games will be played against regional opponents or inter-conference play. The league said that teams will not face each other more than three times during the 2017 regular season.
What does San Antonio FC's schedule look like?
San Antonio will open its second season against the RGV FC Toros in another installment of the South Texas Derby. The match will be the first match played in the Toros' new stadium, H-E-B Park, assuming it's completed. The following week will be San Antonio's home opener at Toyota Field against LA Galaxy II.
San Antonio welcomed itself to the USL in 2016 with an impressive 3-0 road win against S2, but then went winless in its next four matches. Getting as many points possible in the opening four matches, which includes a three match home stand, will be crucial for the clubs post-season ambitions.
During the teams early Pacific NorthWest road trip, SAFC will visit Whitecaps FC II in Vancouver for the first time ever. Later in August, San Antonio will travel to "The Biggest Little City in the World" to play the lone Western Conference newcomer, Reno 1868 FC.
During the 2017 season San Antonio will see a few new faces not only in the league, but also playing at Toyota Field. In mid-April the club will host Reno 1868 for the first match between the two sides. The Alamo City will also host the newly named Orange County FC (Orange County Blues) and Phoenix Rising FC (Arizona United) in addition to hosting Sacramento Republic FC at Toyota Field for the first time ever.
Another change to the 2017 schedule is that San Antonio will play its first ever match against an Eastern Conference club. The Tampa Bay Rowdies, formerly of the North American Soccer League (NASL), will visit Toyota Field in the penultimate match of the season. The Rowdies will be familiar with Toyota Field as they played the former San Antonio Scorpions there during their time in the NASL.
This year's schedule does pretty well by alternating home and away matches. However, the two longest road trips are daunting for the Alamo City boys. SAFC visit all three Pacific NorthWest clubs early in the season in late April and play five of six matches away from home in September, including a four match road trip - the longest in SAFC history. September will also be tough fitting in six matches during the single month.
Matches to Watch
All San Antonio home matches will kick-off at 7:30pm CST, except for the August 7 match vs the Colorado Switchbacks which will start at 8pm CST and the July 14 match against the OKC Energy (TBD). Out of the 16 home matches in 2017, 13 are on Saturdays and one each on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. San Antonio plays each Western Conference opponent at twice and plays RGV, Swope Park, and OKC three times each.
