Thanks to our friends over at The Loon Call (@thelooncall), news has broken that the City of Las Vegas is not being considered for MLS expansion until after 2018. Here is the letter from MLS Commissioner Don Garber:
Even with plans for a stadium to be built IF MLS had granted the city a franchise, a petition that was brought forth to put the stadium deal to a public vote looks to be the straw that broke the camels back. With so much public unrest on the stadium deal, it looks like MLS decided that it was not worth considering anymore.
Even though I feel for the fans that truly wanted a MLS team in their city, I have to step back and agree with the Commissioner's decision to not consider Las Vegas.
What does this do for the other cities vying for an expansion franchise? Well, it takes a contender out of the equation and in my opinion, lifts Sacramento to the top of the list, if it wasn't already there. With the current conference alignment, with Atlanta and LAFC coming into the fold for 2017, I'd have to assume that one of the Minneapolis bids would be next in line due to the unbalance if Sacramento gets a bid, assuming Miami doesn't get its bid. If Miami does get its team, then I think Minneapolis gets left out as well. This disappoints me because I think San Antonio is as worthy a city for a MLS team as any of those in consideration.
As much as I want San Antonio to get a bid, I know that we are behind insofar-as having investors with the money to take the Scorpions to the next level. The stadium is there waiting to expand, and the city with an established fan base that is ready for another top-flight team. But until we get a similar letter from the Commissioner saying that San Antonio is out of consideration, I still have faith that we are working towards a way to get San Antonio what it deserves: a MLS team.
No matter what happens though, I will always love and support the San Antonio Scorpions in whatever league they play in. All us supporters can do is come out to the games and cheer our Alamo City Boys on to victory!
