The good people at FOX Soccer and Facebook collected data from Facebook fans and created this map of where teams have support in Texas. The map is for MLS teams, which in Texas would be FC Dallas and the Houston Dynamo, but it also includes data from the San Antonio Scorpions of the NASL.
It doesn't surprise me one bit that most of the state is covered in red and orange. FC Dallas has been around for 20 years and the Houston Dynamo for 10 years. But in only their 4th year of play, the San Antonio Scorpions have captured a small, but decent portion of South Central Texas for their own.
The data displayed is from October of 2014. I would like to see more updated data for the start of the 2015 season; a lot has happened since this data was collected.
In November of 2014, the San Antonio Scorpions won the Fall Season Championship and then followed that up by capturing the NASL Championship (the Soccer Bowl) for the first time. It would be interesting to see if that had any affect on the counties surrounding Bexar County. There is also the rise of the Austin Aztex who will play their first season in the USL, the D3 sanctioned league in the U.S. this year. I would like to see how many, if any, counties they have taken from the other teams around Austin.
FOX Soccer and Facebook also created maps of California and the United States showing where teams fans are. You can see those maps here.
