Just hours after the USL released their 2016 regular season schedule, word got out that longtime San Antonio Scorpions fan-favorite, Billy Forbes, will be staying in the North American Soccer League.
The demise of the Scorpions brought much uncertainty to his future. Before the sale of Toyota Field, Forbes had signed another contract with the Scorpions, probably not knowing fully that the team wouldn't be playing again in the league.
The fans certainly wanted Forbes to sign on with the new USL San Antonio club, but as Alamo Soccer can confirm, he had multiple offers, including USL San Antonio. It was ultimately his choice and he will be staying in the NASL. The team to which he has signed with is yet to be disclosed, but with his former head coach at the helm, Rayo OKC seems a likely place for Forbes to end up at. Rayo has made some noise in their handful of signings as they gear up for their first year in the NASL.
During his time in San Antonio his impact was felt. Billy was tied for #5 in goals scored for San Antonio all-time at 10, he was #4 in games played at 50 - including a club record 42 consecutive appearances set between 2014 and 2015. He is #3 in minutes played with 3,842 and is the club's all-time assists leader with 15.
It's easy to see why fans in San Antonio wanted to keep him. His talent speaks for itself. We will certainly miss him and wish him all the best as he says good-bye to the Alamo City.
